Project Chemocentryx
ChemoCentryx is a biopharmaceutical company that in 2021 moved its headquarters to a new location, 835 Industrial Road, San Carlos. WeSTco Iron Works was entrusted with the detailing, BIM modelling, fabrication and erection of all miscellaneous metals on the job. The key element of the project was the staircase that connects the fifth and sixth floors. This is the space the Chemocentryx community shares, affording the opportunity for interaction and a place to celebrate the company’s groundbreaking work. The expression of the stair is inspired by the double helix which describes the structure of a DNA molecule and consists of two strands that wind around each other like a twisted ladder. The stringers of the inside of the spiral stair, wind up through the double height space and appear and disappear from and into the floor and ceiling respectively. The structural supports and all the connections are expressed with the resulting form being both sculptural and kinetic while referencing the helical form which connects all living forms. The use of threaded rods as part of the stair design allows for the sculptural organic form to remain the main focus while allowing the stair to appear as a floating element suspended from above. The ribbons follow the circular elements expressed in the helix and circular stair layout. Some of the secondary supporting elements include the thickened stringer on both sides, solid pan treads and risers as well as the metal decking supporting the landings.
